Standards and interoperability
Interoperability
Interoperability refers to the ability of different information technology systems, devices, and software applications to communicate, exchange, and use data accurately, effectively, and consistently in both directions.
ACES is an active member of a national steering committee dedicated to advancing the development and implementation of technical standards that enhance interoperability. These efforts are critical to enabling the seamless integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into Australia’s evolving energy system.
The Distributed Energy Integration Program (DEIP)—a collaborative initiative involving government agencies, market bodies, industry stakeholders, and consumer groups—hosts the Interoperability Steering Committee (ISC), which leads this important work.

Standardising protocols for Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
In August 2021, a major milestone in energy interoperability was achieved with the official release of an implementation guide designed to enable communication between technology systems, devices, and software. The Common Smart Inverter Profile – Australia (CSIP-AUS), based on the IEEE 2030.5 standard, provides a framework for managing distributed energy resources (DER) within the electricity system.
CSIP-AUS establishes guidelines that support interoperability — the ability of diverse IT systems, devices, and applications to communicate and operate together effectively. It defines a shared understanding of what information is exchanged, how it is formatted, and how it should be used by network and system operators.
This publication represents the culmination of over two years of collaboration among industry stakeholders, research organisations, and regulatory bodies. Key contributors include the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), and the Australian National University (ANU), all brought together through the Distributed Energy Integration Program (DEIP).
The Interoperability Steering Committee (ISC) has since produced a range of guides and reports to support the industry in advancing DER integration and interoperability. Work is continuing, with CSIP-AUS version 2 now in development.
